This week Google announced the release of Google Earth 6 on their company blog. If you’ve used past versions you know the first thing you do is open the program and immediately search for your neighborhood. Then you search for your mom’s house!
Several new functions have been added.
First, they added trees! Why is it a big deal? Because it helps to visualize the area with the trees in place, when you’ve never been there before. Say you are researching a city for a business conference in San Diego for the first time, or a family vacation to New York City. You’ll have a much better feel of the area around the conference center or ‘see’ Central Park for easier navigation when you get there.

Second, the new integrated Street View is exactly that. In larger cities after you turn on the 3Dviewing in the side panel, simply zoom down to the street level and voila! You’re walking down Fisherman’s wharf ready to head up to Ghirardelli Square for a famous Hot Fudge Sundae.
Third, the historic imagery feature is easier to use. I’ve been to Warsaw and they have rebuilt much of the ‘old town’, but I wanted to see it before. Now you click on the oldest date in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. Taking you back to images from before the war.
The last new feature of the new release is ease of use with your mobile phone. Check out the QR code to quickly download the program direct to your Android or iPhone. I tested it out on my Android Incredible and it took less than 2 minutes total. I love QR codes!
Google Earth 6 is free to download, use online or via mobile, plus there is a professional version for $399 with additional professional tools designed specifically for business users.
